Description:
Drosera intermedia, also known as the Oblong-leaved Sundew or Water Sundew, thrives in extremely wet, boggy conditions, often found growing on floating mats where it can reach its largest size, up to 3 inches. This medium-height plant can withstand extended submersion and tolerate drier summer periods. When exposed to full sun, its glistening tentacles give it a silvery appearance. The spatula-shaped leaves are green with bright red tentacles. It emerges in early spring and remains active throughout the summer and fall. During winter, it forms a sturdy hibernaculum (resting bud), which should be pressed down to the soil surface in early spring for optimal growth.

The small flowers are white with a hint of pink, blooming on scapes with multiple blossoms from June to August. Often, young plantlets form on the flower spike (false vivipary). Oblong-leaved Sundew frequently produces abundant seeds, which contribute to its spreading habit. Seeds require stratification (cold, damp storage) and can be stored for several years. This species is widespread, ranging from Canada to the Caribbean, where some varieties do not require dormancy. Drosera intermedia is a resilient plant, making it an excellent addition to a collection or bog garden. Plants in this selection come from seed and may show natural variations.
