The Staghorn Sundew, specifically Drosera binata var. multifida extrema – Staghorn, is a remarkable carnivorous plant of substantial size, nearly as large as a basketball when it reaches maturity—a truly exceptional feature for a sundew. Its olive-colored, heavily dew-covered, forked leaves are adorned with brilliant red glands, resulting in a striking red gleam when exposed to full sunlight. These leaves are multifaceted, typically branching into 8 to 12 or more tips per leaf. Initially, the leaves emerge in a green hue, but as they bask in full sun, they gradually develop a maroon coloration. This vigorous grower readily extends from its roots, gradually filling its container. Notably, the Staghorn Sundew excels at capturing larger flying insects, making it an impressive bug catcher. This sub-tropical plant maintains an attractive display year-round and can withstand light frost, with new leaves emerging once conditions improve. Its preference lies in open, sunlit, and marshy conditions with peaty soils. It showcases its white blossoms on tall, multi-flowered red scapes between June and September.
D. binata var. multifida presents two distinct forms: Staghorn and Staghorn Pink Flower. While they infrequently produce viable seeds in cultivation, they are easily propagated through division using their thick, black, and hairy roots or by leaf cuttings. The larger form of the Staghorn Sundew thrives when displayed in hanging baskets or on plant stands. Beware, as this plant’s captivating qualities will inevitably make it one of your favorite carnivorous plants. Notably, D. binata var. multifida extrema – Staghorn is presumed to be extinct in its native habitat. The plants offered here originate from cuttings and are identical to the parent plant. For maximum visual impact, consider using multiple plants in a 6″ pot. Juvenile plants may be shipped. Multi-forking, a unique feature, is evident in mature plants that are 2 years or older.
When ordering, please be aware that the plants are shipped bare-root and carefully wrapped in damp sphagnum moss. The photographs provided represent the general characteristics of the species and not the specific plant you will receive.
